MUN events are a great way for students to engage in current world affairs. It encourages students to engage in current world affairs. It encourages students to take on and attempt to deal with complex global crisis, and ways of dealing with controversial issues. The MUN sessions also ask students to debate and consider the legal, moral, economic, environmental, historical, social and cultural dimensions of varying political problems and issues that may be heard by various bodies at the UN.
Model United Nations events tie into the Citizenship curriculum for students from year 9 to post 16 for the following reasons:
By participating students will get the opportunity to develop a range of skills, including but not limited to critical to critical analysis, communication, public speaking and presentation, co – operation, team work and problem solving. The events will also provide the delegates with environment to represent opinions that they might not hold themselves, and to take on the role of diplomats.
Students gain a greater understanding of their fellow delegates that participate in the MUN due to the high amount of interaction that is integral to effective simulations. These sessions provide student to participate in individual and collective action that includes decision making [voting on resolutions/amendments], negotiating [lobbying/creating resolutions] and presenting the ideas of their delegation [addressing committee/speaking in favour/against motions.
We envisage the MUN project to be great platform for the students to collaborate with different people, from new friendships, engage critically with controversial issues and participate in collective decision – making from an informed point of view.
