Siddhartha Gautama rejected his luxurious upbringing, and set off to live as an ascetic, travelling from town to town. An ascetic is a person who suffers physical hardships as part of their religious beliefs to enable them to focus better on life’s truths. Siddhartha eventually rejected this extreme life style and chose what he called the ‘Middle Path’ to enlightenment. Buddhists
are opposed to violence and cruelty. Buddhism is particularly practised
in Far Eastern countries.
