Buddhism is one of the major religions of the world with over 350 million followers. It is an ancient religion over 2,500 thousand years old.

The Kashyapa Buddhist Centre provides followers of Buddhism and others the opportunity to study and learn more about Buddhism and incorporate Buddha’s teachings into their everyday lives.

Buddhism is based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, the “Buddha” or "enlightened one," who lived in Northern India at the foot of the Himalayas in the 6th century BCE.

Siddhartha Gautama rejected his luxurious upbringing, and set off to live as an ascetic, travelling from town to town. An ascetic is a person who suffers physical hardships as part of their religious beliefs to enable them to focus better on life’s truths.

Siddhartha eventually rejected this extreme life style and chose what he called the ‘Middle Path’ to enlightenment.

Buddhists are opposed to violence and cruelty. Buddhism is particularly practised in Far Eastern countries.

The Basics of Buddhism

The way to achieve enlightenment or ‘Buddahood’ is through meditation, morality and wisdom.

Buddhists do not believe in a God but are tolerant of all other religions.
Buddhists believe that everything is in a state of change – nothing ever stays the same.
Buddhists believe that all lives are interconnected and that our actions affect other people directly and indirectly.
