  Cartwright Hall Art Gallery

Cartwright Hall was built as an art gallery in 1904 in the Baroque style. Baroque architecture is characterised by extremely elaborate and ornate artistic style and complex designs.

Baroque style can also be applied to music. Try listening to any work by Handel or Bach and listen for the same complex curves and shapes.

This beautiful building now houses an extremely impressive art collection of 19th and 20th century British artists.
The Transcultural Gallery has a permament collection of modern South Asian art which includes a portrait of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism
.

The museum has paintings by David Hockney, a world famous Bradford born artist. The largest collections of his works can be found at the nearby Salt’s Mill complex.
Other paintings in the collections at Cartwright include works by John Singer Sargant, John Collier, Ford Madox Brown, Salima Hashmi, Balraj Khanna and Anish Kapoor.
See if you can find out more about these artists.

Cartwright Hall is situated in Lister Park (also known as Manningham Park). Lister Park boasts a variety of features including botanical gardens, a boating lake, and the Mughal Water Garden.

The Bradford Mughal Garden was built using local materials and familiar plants that suit Bradford’s climate and was designed to reflect the cultural diversity of the area.
