The latest update is forecasting extreme weather conditions with blizzards and heavy snowfall from 6.00pm tonight until 12 noon tomorrow with severe weather being forecast after that. The forecast indicates that there are likely to marked variations in the amount of snow that will settle. 5-10 cm is likely in many areas but there may be as much as 20 -30 cm over higher ground
An extreme weather warning is unusual and, having consulted with Head Teacher representatives, the decision has been taken to close all schools on Tuesday 3rd February.
Head teachers may wish to consider whether staff should be asked to come into school if they can manage the journey safely. These decisions are at the discretion of individual head teachers. The Guidance Note, issued in November 2008, is attached for your information.
WYTS has been informed and there will be no school transport.
At present the closure is for Tuesday 3rd only and schools should apply the guidance to make decisions about closure for subsequent days if the severe weather persists.
The radio stations will be informed and they will broadcast the information for parents. You do not need to make individual calls. However, please advise your staff to listen to the radio updates regularly in order that they are informed about any subsequent school closures.
Yours sincerely
