Secondary mathematics case studies: The proof of the pudding is in the teaching!
In autumn 2008 the National Strategy will be publishing a booklet and CD ROM of ten case studies. All these studies are a result of teachers working collaboratively to develop their pedagogical repertoire: the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of teaching decisions to promote ‘deep learning’ and to provide opportunities for pupils to develop Key Process skills.
The following case studies undertaken in two schools were part of collaborative work with a group of teachers and consultants reflecting on how existing Strategy mathematics material can be used to develop effective pedagogy for reasoning and proof in circle geometry. The pedagogy case studies have also been produced to help teachers to see contextual examples of the Teaching and Learning approaches and to consider the impact on learning by teaching the Key Process skills in Geometry and Measures Education Bradford’s Secondary Mathematics Consultant, Raj Kumar, has worked with Belle Vue Girls’ School on part of the case study: The proof of the pudding is in the teaching!
Further resources such as the Unit Plan and pupils responses can be found in the following folder: RajKumarStudyApril08EducationbradfordLAAppendices. . There are nine files in total that make up the unit. Please note that you will require the Cabri software to view the Cabri files.
Hungry for more? The booklet ‘Improving Teaching and Learning in mathematics’ 827KB contains ten studies, accompanying study notes, and an appendix paper: Relational Understanding and Instrumental understanding by Richard Skemp. The purpose of the booklet is to act as a stimulus to aid teachers’ reflections on their own practice.
