New Autistic Spectrum DVD Released! Print E-mail
Thursday, 31 January 2008
An information pack, consisting of a DVD and accompanying booklet, which outlines the main areas of supporting children and young people on the Autism Spectrum, is to be released in Bradford. The pack, developed by the Autism Team at Education Bradford will provide a wealth of useful information to schools and other educational settings about many different aspects of Autism. Topics covered range from introducing the team and how it works, giving factual information about Autism and how it affects daily life, to issues such as sharing the diagnosis. It also suggests positive approaches to use when working with those on the Autism Spectrum.   The project reflects the importance that an increased awareness of Autism plays, in ensuring the very best start for the children and young people of Bradford, in line with the government’s National Autism Plan for Children and Every Child Matters agenda.

The DVD will feature children and young people who attend Bradford’s mainstream schools and early years settings, and will reflect the range of provision and support available. Throughout the DVD, it will be possible to see, through first hand accounts of parents, staff and the children themselves, the benefits of sharing knowledge, working together and recognising the strengths of individuals in order for them to succeed to their full potential.

The booklet will offer information, practical advice and ‘where to go next’ for more detailed support and guidance. The aim is that schools will develop their skills, in partnership with Learning Support Services, in order to support the many individuals who are on the autism spectrum and included in mainstream settings in Bradford.

Carol Shiret , Head of Education Bradford’s Autism Team, said that the project would mean that staff in schools would have opportunities, through the DVD, to see real life examples of good practice in action.

The information pack will be launched on 31st January 2008 to all those who have played an active part in producing it as well as those involved with autism services in Bradford. Further sessions this year are planned to introduce the pack into Bradford’s schools via their Special Needs Co-ordinators.

Education Bradford would like to say a big thank you to all of the participants in the filming of the DVD and to their families, who helped to make the project the success that it is.

Any further information can be obtained from Learning Support Services on 01274 385833 or by e-mailing the Head of Team at
