Anne Frank Tree for Bradford

Bradford's Anne Frank Ambassadors and Education Bradford's Diversity and Cohesion Team have been honoured with a very special permanent symbol of their work over the past academic year. In recognition of their commitment to promoting human rights and their continuing efforts to help young people in Bradford realise that it is possible to 'stand up to hatred', the Anne Frank Trust in Amsterdam has gifted one of a few very special saplings to the people of Bradford.

This sapling is an offspring of the 'Anne Frank' tree in Amsterdam, a chestnut tree which is in the garden of the warehouse, in which Anne and seven other people hid from the Nazis during the Second World War. The tree could be seen from the 'Secret Annexe' and Anne mentions it in many of her diary entries. The tree was one of Anne's few links with the outside world.

Lucy Glennon of the Anne Frank Trust UK said "We have a small number of saplings which have been grafted from the Anne Frank Tree in Amsterdam. I have secured one for Bradford, as a lasting testament to the work of the Diversity and Cohesion Team and the school ambassadors".

It is hoped that the tree will be planted in a prominent place, so that as it grows it may be enjoyed by all the people of Bradford and serve as a reminder that as Anne said (and the ambassadors proved).

"No one has to wait a single moment before starting to improve the world".
