11th June Cultural Heritage Trails – Learning Outside the Classroom Using GPS trails to explore equality, diversity and promote community cohesion. The Little Horton Cultural Heritage Trail looks at the historical, geographical, social and religious heritage of the area. It helps students to understand how an area has developed and changed over a period of time and to see how events and actions in the past have influenced the present and may have an impact on the future. This understanding is developed through interaction with the environment. It is a way of promoting learning outside the classroom in a community setting. Students are led on the trail by the use of GPS devices that take you on a tour around the area, providing background information on local figures, and explores the reasons behind Little Horton’s diverse population. Staff will complete the trail on this day, along with viewing extracts from the accompanying DVD, providing information on how to create a heritage trail around the local area of your own school. Cross curricular and cross phase.
