Holocaust Memorial Day 27th January 2009

Laisterdyke B&E College Photograph Nicola Fox

A big thank you to all the children who came and helped, performed, or just supported Bradford Remembers, Holocaust Memorial Day 2009, at the Victoria Hall, Shipley. This year’s theme reflected the work that many children and teachers have already been involved in here in Bradford ‘Stand up to Hatred’ and provided the children who attended with an experience that will help them in their roles as Anne Frank Ambassadors for the 'Anne Frank [+ you}' exhibition in March.

Thank you –

What the teachers said ..........

'Year 6 has been very fortunate in being invited to take part in the Bradford Service for the Holocaust Memorial Day. They were a credit to our school, acting as greeter and guides for the many different visitors to the event. There was time afterwards for the children to chat individually to the different visitors, finding out more about their stories, beliefs and backgrounds. I was very proud of the confidence and understanding shown by the pupils. They will have further chance to extend their interest in the holocaust subject when they help with the Anne Frank and You exhibition at Cartwright Hall in March.'

Miss D Butler, Head Teacher, Keelham Primary School

The pupils' voice..........

'On the 27th January Year 6 went to the Holocaust Memorial Day as part of their work. It was really fun to learn more things about the Holocaust. There were some people there who survived the Holocaust. Just think how you would feel if this happened to you.'

'On 27th January Keelham Primary’s Year 6 went to the Holocaust Memorial Day in Saltaire to remember how bad the genocide was and to prove racism is wrong.  When we arrived we were assigned to do certain jobs, some of us stayed next to the door to greet the people who came in. William and I greeted people who came into the main hall, then we gave them a pen to sign a book. After, we got to talk to some people that were in the Holocaust. My friend Josh and I talked to a man saved by the British Government, he was just one of the 10,000 people saved just before the war started, his name was Charles. His brother and one of his two sisters and his mum and dad all died in the Holocaust sadly. The ceremony finished off with a Jewish man singing and the whole of Year 6 enjoyed it.'

'When we got there a lady showed us what to do so Josh and Ryan were handing out leaflets and Jacob and Alex were standing by the door greeting people. Paige and George were opening the doors for people. After we had our dinner we went to talk to people and Spike and I talked to a man called Charles. He was one of the 10,000 people saved by the British Government. It was a great experience.'
