Kokeshi Exhibition 9th March - 1st April 2010 - Fully Booked!!!

The Kokeshi multi - media exhibition extends and consolidates the resource of the same name that was sent out to schools in the Bradford Metropolitan District in November 2009 (the resource may be downloaded by clicking on the menu on the left hand side of the page). It comprises large exhibition panels, looped DVD footage, music (written and produced by local musicians) and an all surround Big Picture Show, all designed and produced here in Bradford. Kokeshi utilises photographs and archive footage (with the permission of the Hiroshima Peace Museum and Nihan Hidankyo) and combines these with ideas, commentary and artwork produced by students in Bradford's primary and secondary schools, which consider issues of importance then and now, locally, nationally and internationally.  Currently work is underway to also incorporate Promethean interactive technology for future use.

The exhibition is designed to make children and young people aware of the way in which others (in a different time and different place) have set about standing up and speaking out about things and effecting change. It challenges them to do the same in a 21st century context and to be active citizens.

The soundtrack for the exhibition was recorded by rap artist Imran Hafeez and folk singer/songwriter Roger Davies.

Our Kokeshi staff team comprises Stuart Brooke (Travellers and New Communities), Linda Cowie, Alina Khan, Tony Bullock (Music and Arts) Gemma Whiteoak, Ben Chalcraft (Carlton Bolling City Learning Centre), Diane Hadwen and Chaz Singh (Schools Linking Network).

Many thanks to all participating schools, to our excellent enthusiastic teachers and to the fantastic Kokeshi Ambassadors.

Education Bradford's partners in the Kokeshi Exhibition are Bradford Council, Bradford College, Carlton Bolling City Learning Centre, Bradford City for Peace, the Peace Museum (Bradford) and the Hiroshima Peace Museum

Generic Project Aims

·         To improve awareness and understanding among all communities and all generations in the Bradford District

·         To help raise awareness of the importance of human rights and encourage individuals to take an active role as citizens

·         To reduce racism, prejudice and challenge stereotypes, by addressing hate crime and community tensions, locally, nationally and internationally

·         To provide focused, educationally valuable, interactive opportunities for people from a variety of ages, abilities, socio-economic, ethnic and religious backgrounds, to meet and work together and to form positive relationships

·         To design a sustainable peer education programme, that utilises modern technology, to meaningfully promote equality, diversity and community cohesion

·         To utilise and increase the knowledge and skills of teachers in dealing with challenging issues of human rights

·         To embed equality, diversity and community cohesion across the curriculum and throughout school life

·         To help pupils to become successful learners, confident individuals and active citizens

The project has had an overwhelming response from schools. Our Anne Frank Student Ambassadors peer educated pupils in primary and secondary schools, passing on their skills and knowledge to pupils who are now Bradford's Kokeshi Ambassadors (these new Ambassadors are currently in years four to eleven).

The Ambassadors acted as peer educator guides for visitors to the Kokeshi exhibition, encouraging other children and young people to stand up, speak out and make a difference at subsequent Speakers' Corner events (coming to a school near you from May 2010!)
