Kokeshi: Stand up, Speak out, Make a difference! - 2011

As a result of this Project's great success, it will run again in the academic year 2010/2011. Below is a provisional programme of events (dates to be confirmed in the first week of September for training, peer education and Speakers Corner events). The Kokeshi exhibition has been improved and updated with help from Carlton Bolling CLC and will be open for school visits for the whole of March 2011 at the Yorkshire Craft Centre, courtesy of Bradford College.

Due to the high level of interest expressed already, it is recommended that schools contact Gemma Whiteoak (details below) at their earliest convenience to register their interest in being involved in the Project; bookings for the exhibition will be taken from October 2010. Speakers' Corner Events 2010
Wednesday, 26 May 2010

Stand up, Speak out, Make a difference!

Speakers' Corner

Our Speakers' Corner Events start this week at Allerton Primary School, followed by another five events across the District (see below). Host schools like Allerton, are those who volunteered to open their doors to other schools in the locality; pupils will perform and present their work to visiting pupils, who will also get an opportunity to showcase their own thoughts, ideas, opinions and work, inspired by the Kokeshi exhibition and Kokeshi: Stand up, Speak out, Make a difference teaching resource. These both encourage pupils to explore what they see as important now, today, to take responsibility and positive action to encourage change as active citizens.

The Speakers’ Corner Events address the 'Every Child Matters’ directive to encourage pupil voice and aim to:

·         Help pupils to become successful learners, confident individuals and active citizens

·         Raise awareness of the importance of human rights

·         Reduce racism, prejudice and challenge stereotypes, by addressing hate crime and community tensions,   locally, nationally and internationally

·         Provide focused, educationally valuable, interactive opportunities for people from a variety of ages, abilities, socio-economic, ethnic and religious backgrounds, to meet and work together and to form positive relationships

·         Design a sustainable peer education programme, that utilises modern technology, to meaningfully promote equality, diversity and community cohesion

·         Embed equality, diversity and community cohesion across the curriculum and throughout school life

At each event there will be a 'Cab-Cam' that will allow pupils to record their thoughts and ideas and the events will be supported by local artists and performers; Roger Davies, Junior Jam, the Big Hoo Ha, Tim Curtis, Imran Hafeez and Zubin. These artists will be performing and running workshops, having worked with children in their individual schools.

Speakers' Corner Events are taking place on:

27th May - Allerton Primary School

16th June - Sandy Lane Primary School

21st June - Tong High School

23rd June - Cavendish Primary School

25th June  - All Saints Primary School (Bradford)

2nd July - Ben Rhydding Primary School

A total of thirty four schools (both secondary and primary) are involved and this is the maximum that we are able to accommodate this year. Look out for news about our District wide celebration event 10th July, 2010, Centenary Square, where some of this work will be showcased, all welcome to attend.

Good News!  Due to the overwhelming response from schools, we are currently exploring the possibility of running the peer education programme, Kokeshi Exhibition and the Speakers' Corner Events again in 2010/11.

Did you know Bradford has a proud tradition of Speakers' Corners going back to the nineteenth century? Around 1893 the Bradford Speakers’ Stone was erected in Lister Park as a result of people being banned from speaking in Bradford City Centre on political and social issues. This was after strikes at Manningham Mills. These strikes led to the formation of the Independent Labour Party, here in Bradford (look out for the mural at the bottom of Leeds Road that commemorates this). In 1936 the Peace Pledge Union in Bradford, tried to hold an open air meeting against war at the ‘Speakers’ Stone’; the Council refused them permission to do so, but they went ahead, meeting at the park gates, marching to the stone and speaking for peace, not war.

Song Lyrics from the Speakers' Corner Events
Friday, 25 June 2010

The Way We Live

                        We’re growing up in Allerton.

And proud of where we live.

We have our friends and families,

And lots of love to give.

We go school at Ley Top,

                        And this is our song.

                        We wrote especially for you,

                        So you can sing along.

Chorus:  We have the right to freedom

We have the right to fun

We have the right to happiness

                        And so does everyone

We have the right to friendship

We have the right to dream

We have the right to live our lives in peace and harmony

We have the right to live our lives in peace and harmony

When we think of our future,

                        We wonder what we’ll be.

                        Maybe a Nurse or Doctor,

We’ll have to wait and see.

We’ll grow up to be friendly,

We’ll grow up to be good.

We’ll try to make a difference,

                        Like everybody should.

                        (Chorus)

We sing to you our message,

                        For every boy and girl,

                        In every town and city,

                        All around the world.

So now our song is ending

And we would like to say

                        We’re moving on together

                        Into another day

We have the right to freedom,

We have the right to fun.

We have the right to happiness,

                        And so does everyone.

We have the right to friendship,

We have the right to dream.

We have the right to live our lives in peace and harmony,

We have the right to live our lives in peace and harmony,

We have the right to live our lives in peace and harmony.

Written by the children of Ley Top Primary School year six class: ‘Fast and Furious’ and Roger Davies
