Welcome to a website managed by the Bradford Council’s Diversity and Cohesion Service, part of the Department of Children’s Service’s, for all those interested in equality, diversity and community cohesion in the Bradford Metropolitan District and beyond.

It is a site that explores national and district wide initiatives aimed at children and young people. It provides information about on - going projects and a forum for teachers and others involved in education, to share good practice.

"Good schools work with parents, community organisations and local agencies to create a healthy, safe and respectful environment in school, after school, and on the way to and from school. Good teachers instil an ethos where aspiration is the best reason for children to avoid harmful behaviour."

The Schools White Paper 2010

‘Ultimately, education is the great equaliser."

 Arne Duncan, UNESCO

“... there needs to be room in the life of the school for an exploration of wider social issues which contribute to the well-being and engagement of all students.”

Schools should:

"Educate children about the differences between different groups of people and create a culture of respect and understanding.”

SUSOMAD 2012: Anne Frank+[YOU}
Thursday, 14 July 2011

We are very pleased to announce that for the fourth consecutive year, the Diversity and Cohesion Service will develop and run a pupil-led project with schools in the Bradford Metropolitan District. Building on the success of Stand up to Hatred: Anne Frank + (YOU!} in 2009 and Stand up, Speak out, Make a Difference 2010 and 2011, we have decided to offer the Anne Frank + (YOU!} exhibition again, alongside the SUSOMAD project for 2011-2012. We are privileged to have been the opportunity to work closely with the Anne Frank Trust UK once again on this work.

The Anne Frank + (YOU!} exhibition will be open for school and community visits between 2nd to 29th March 2012 at the Yorkshire Craft Centre, Bradford College. Schools are able to book visits and workshop activities during this period, for either a morning or afternoon session.

Please note, places are limited and the exhibition always proves to be very popular, so early booking is advisable.  Please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for details on how to book.

Anne Frank + You was launched in 2005 to give Anne Frank’s story and message a contemporary profile for today. It has a strong focus on the issues of identity and moral choice we face in 21st century Britain. It is suitable for adults and children from age 9 (Year 5) up.

Starting from Anne Frank’s writings and experiences, the exhibition is a journey of self exploration for the visitor.  Themes that Anne wrote about in her diary, such as racial hatred, war and conflict and the value of democracy and freedom, are presented in an up to date and contemporary fashion, along with filmed interviews with British teenagers discussing their own views, concerns and hopes for the future.

Our Stand up, Speak out, Make a Difference peer educators will be trained as Anne Frank +[YOU} Ambassadors – to guide and peer educate visitors around the exhibition. A truly unique learning experience for all.

We intend on utilising the Kokeshi exhibition again in the future, but feel that the Anne Frank + [YOU} exhibition links in better with some of the peer education activities that we have planned for the coming academic year. These will focus on prejudice-based bullying, including cyber bulling and online safety. This being a priority set out the Schools White Paper and in the UK Equality Act 2010; we feel it is important to address such issues innovatively and effectively, inside and outside the classroom.

SUSOMAD 2012 is a peer education project that will incorporate our recent resources, including Identity, Heritage and Belonging, Stand up to Hatred and Kokeshi, in promoting the importance of human rights locally, nationally and internationally as a means of reducing racism, bullying, hate crime, and community tension. In particular, addressing issues relating to cyber-bullying and online protection. The project will encourage young people to engage in challenging issues and use their voices in constructive ways, promoting pupil voice. Like in previous years, the project will be made up of four different parts – training for school-based staff, student-led peer education activities, an interactive exhibition, and school-based speakers corner events.

Again the use interactive learning devices will feature during the peer education activities, and also throughout the exhibition.

Speakers Corner Events 2011
Tuesday, 28 June 2011

Speaker’s Corner events took place at two Bradford schools this term – 29th June at Sandy Lane Primary, and 8th July at Thornton Grammar School.

Sixteen schools in total participated in these events this term, where pupils showcased their powerful thoughts, ideas and opinions, as part of the work they have done on the Stand up, Speak out, Make a Difference project this year. The project encourages pupils to explore what matters to them today, and to take positive action, to make a difference.

Pupils had the opportunity to explain what matters to them in a private ‘Big Brother’ style diary room, and also tweeted their comments about performances and their experience of the event. To view comments from the days, either access our twitter account (link below) or view the live twitter feed at www.visibletwwets.com using #bradfordsc11 for the

Sandy Lane
event, or #thorntonsc for the Thornton Grammar event.

Equality Act 2010
Wednesday, 13 July 2011

Equality and Diversity in Education

With the forthcoming changes outlined in the UK Equality Act 2010, requirements on schools and organisations to comply with their legal obligation are changing. The Act draws on a number of different anti-discrimination laws that have been implemented in Great Britain for over 40 years. The Act consists of 9 ‘protected characteristics’:

  • age (applicable to staff not pupils)
  • disability ethnicity and race
  • gender reassignment
  • gender identity and transgender
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • religion and belief
  • sexual orientation.

For further guidance and information, see UK Equality Act 2010.

To see the guidance produced by the DfE on what the new legislation means for schools, click here

Schools will have a ‘general duty’ and ‘specific duties’ in relation to the Act. Insted Consultancy for Equalities in Education have summarised details of these duties, click here for more information.

Timescale and key dates

The requirements of the Act are being introduced gradually between October 2010 and April 2012. Schools and local authorities need to be aware of the following key dates:

  • April 2011: the general public duty (see paragraphs 10–14 below) came into force.
  • 31 January 2012: the specific duty to publish information (see paragraphs 15–19) will come into force for local authorities.
  • 6 April 2012: the specific duty to publish information) will come into force for schools
  • 6 April 2012: the specific duty to publish objectives (see paragraphs 20–21) will come into force for both local authorities and schools.

We are also interested to know from Head teachers and School Leadership Teams if it would be useful to organise a CPD session on developing policy and practice focusing on equality information and objectives. Please note there may be a charge for this.

Shipley / Airedale Community Cohesion Event
Monday, 11 July 2011

Children from schools in the Shipley / Airedale Local Area Partnership have been working collaboratively over the year on various community cohesion projects. Pupils, along with their school staff showcased some of this fantastic work at a community cohesion celebration event at Victoria Hall on June.

Parents, members of the public, and various partners were invited to look around the work on display, and talk to pupils about their involvement in these projects, and how this learning had impacted on their schools and community. They were also given the opportunity to meet and talk to Bradford’s new Lord Mayor, Councillor Naveeda Ikram.
