Our Anne Frank Student Ambassadors have started to peer educate pupils in primary and secondary schools, passing on their skills and knowledge to pupils who will take on the role of Bradford's Kokeshi Ambassadors and to inspire these pupils and others, to stand up, speak out and make a difference at subsequent Speakers' Corner events.
CPD for teacher participants is now complete and so far we have we have worked with over 100 teachers from 44 primary, secondary schools and PRUs, plus staff and pupils from nine further schools who are involved in creating the artwork for the exhibition. We also welcome two new supporting members of staff to the project - Stuart Brooke and Linda Cowie, who along with our new administrator Gemma Whiteoak, will be supporting participating pupils and teachers. We are also fortunate to have the help and support of Tony Bullock, Brenda Thomson and Ben Chalcraft in delivering this exciting project.
Many thanks to all participating schools and to all our excellent enthusiastic teachers.

One hundred and forty four children attended this year’s Bradford Remembers – Holocaust Memorial Day at Victoria Hall, Shipley; some as helpers and guides, others as performers and a considerable number as guests. They represented their schools and Bradford's young people wonderfully and were a credit to their teachers, families and communities. One leading Council official remarked that with these children:
‘Bradford’s future is in safe hands’
Well done to all the schools who took part in any way at all and many thanks to Bradford Council for allowing Education Bradford to involve so many children and young people in such an important, thought provoking, moving and at times (due to the input of the children and young people) entertaining event.

The Anne Frank Awards seek to recognise people who have shown great personal strength, moral courage, and determination to stand up for what is right. They seek to acknowledge people who believe in Anne Frank’s inspirational words "It only takes a moment to start to improve the world" and put them into action. The Anne Frank Trust UK believe that those who speak out, go out of their way for others, and stick out their necks for the common good should be identified and held up as an example to us all. Each year the Anne Frank Awards culminate in a live event where the winners are celebrated and their stories shared as shining examples.
The 2009 Awards ceremony took place on June 11th at House of Commons and The House of Lords, Westminster London. Representatives of six of the seven Bradford schools who were involved in the Stand up to Hatred Project – Keelham Primary, Home Farm Primary, Queensbury, Tong, Laisterdyke and BradfordGrammar School, went to collect the award on behalf of their fellow ambassadors.
They enjoyed a trip on the river Thames and then afternoon tea at the House of Commons, where they received their award from the Right Honourable Michael Portillo aided by Bradford MP Mr Terry Rooney. They were entertained with an impromptu magic show from Lord Jenner on the corridors of the Commons and a guided tour by his aide, of the upper and lower chambers. They then went on to a drinks reception at the House of Lords to mark the 80th Birthday of Anne Frank, where they met the Leader of the House of Lords - Baroness Royall of Blaisdon and Baroness Kennedy of the Shaws QC.
Back in Bradford on the 18th June, The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor John D Godward held a Civic Reception in honour of the 59 Anne Frank Student Ambassadors and in recognition of their hard work and to celebrate them winning a local (Community Harmony) and a national award! The reception took place in the Banqueting suite at City Hall. Parents, teachers, headteachers and governors were also invited to the celebration, where they heard from the Lord Mayor and Diversity and Cohesion staff, just what a journey these young people have been on over the year, and how they really have worked hard in our communities and will continue to pass on their knowledge and ideas over the next twelve months.
Click here for an article written in the Thornton Directory in July 2009, documenting the success of this project, and impact it has had on KeelhamPrimary School and surrounding area.
A second article was published in the Thornton Directory, about follow-up work that Keelham Primary School have done since their involvement in Stand up to Hatred.
